State of the Blog, Year 2

Two years ago, I hit the “Publish” button and began a blog. So naturally it’s time for a little self reflection on how things are going.

Since I started the blog, I’ve been trying to be a more active member in the general SQL community. I made going to PASS Summit a priority. I’ve become more involved in my local user group. I’ve started speaking. And I’ve even made some friends along the way.

But even more than that, I feel more invested in my career overall. I want to be the person that my coworkers go to because they know I’m keeping on top of what is going on in our industry or that if we don’t have an answer, I know where to find them. This is something that makes me invaluable as an employee. When I changed jobs recently, my blog was on my resume. It was another way for my perspective employer to know who I am and what I stand for before I stepped foot in the door. Working for a company that understands the value of an employee having an outlet for investing in their career like this was an important criteria for me as part of that job search.

I still have lots of dreams for this space. I feel like I haven’t always been great about blogging regularly. I have several post ideas I haven’t started fleshing out yet. I think I’ve had a post in the draft folder for months. I’ve been neglecting the idea I had when I first started blogging. My posts haven’t been very technical lately. I tried to schedule a time once a week to write and I’m rarely following it these days.

Please don’t get me wrong. This list exists because I have high standards for myself so I’m probably being much harder on myself than anyone else would be. But none of this means that I regret that I started blogging. It’s actually the exact opposite.

As for all the things I want to do here? I’m just going to keep at it and try to meet some of those goals. It’s OK if I’m not a perfect blogger because that’s not really my goal. I started this blog to become a better database professional. I’m keeping at blogging in the hopes that I can help some of you with the same things I’m working on.

So to all those reading – thank you! I hope you’ve liked what you’ve seen so far and I hope you keep reading to see what comes down the road.
